Single escape routes - permitted circumstances
A single escape route is permitted only from areas where a storey exit can be reached within maximum travel distance in one direction and occupancy does not exceed specified limits (60 people generally, 30 for institutions), or from storeys with occupancy of 60 or fewer.
Alternative escape routes should be provided from all parts of the building other than in the following circumstances where a single route is permitted – (a) areas from which a storey exit can be reached within the maximum travel distance in one direction only given in Table 2.3, provided that no room in this situation has an occupant capacity of more than 60 people, or 30 people if the building is an Institution [Purpose Group 2(a)]; and (b) a storey with an occupant capacity of no more than 60 people provided that a storey exit can be reached within the maximum travel distance in one direction only given in Table 2.3.
