Means of escape in assembly buildings
Assembly buildings such as sports grounds, theatres, and conference centres must follow BS 5588-6 Sections 3 and 5 and BS 9999 for means of escape design, particularly where fixed seating affects escape routes. Sports grounds subject to The Safety of Sports Grounds (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 must follow the relevant Northern Ireland guide.
There are particular problems that arise when fixed seating impinges on people's ability to escape in the event of a fire. This may occur at sports grounds, theatres, lecture halls and conference centres etc. Guidance on this and other aspects of means of escape in an Assembly building is given in Sections 3 and 5 of BS 5588-6 and the relevant recommendations of BS 9999 that code should be followed in appropriate cases. In the case of buildings to which The Safety of Sports Grounds (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 applies the relevant guidance in the Northern Ireland guide to safety at sports grounds should be followed.
