Insulated external walls - examples
Diagram 6.4 illustrates six different configurations for insulated external walls, including solid walls with external protective systems, cavity walls with various insulation approaches, and timber framed walls with different cladding types.
Solid walls: external protective system with 50 mm minimum residual cavity, breather membrane, sheathing board, vented and drained cavity. Cavity walls: (a) External insulation, (b) Internal insulation with breather membrane, sheathing board, vented and drained cavity, (c) Partial fill insulation with vapour control layer and 25 mm minimum cavity, (d) Full fill insulation. Framed walls: (e) Timber framed wall with brick cladding with vapour control layer and insulation/framing, (f) Timber framed wall with tile cladding with vertical counter batten. Note: In the case of light steel frames, insulation should be fixed to the external face of the steel frame to minimise the risk of condensation. See paras 6.11, 6.14 and 6.18.
