Local Development Plan Considerations for Air Pollution

Local Development Plans should identify potentially polluting developments, zone land to minimize incompatible uses, and consider air quality management areas and the need to reduce travel through public transport integration.

Examples of how LDPs should have regard to air pollution considerations include: • identifying land or setting out criteria for the location of potentially polluting developments and the availability of alternative sites; • zoning land with a view to minimising the potential for incompatible land uses to become established in close proximity; and • taking into account the existing or likely future air quality in an area and having regard to any local Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) action plans in planning for development. This could include reducing the need to travel and integrating development with public transport services.
