Assessment criteria for extensions and alterations

The Council will assess proposals based on scale, massing, design, materials, and impacts on neighbouring amenity including dominance, privacy, loss of light, height and position relative to windows and habitable rooms.

When assessing proposals the Council will give careful consideration to the impact of extensions in terms of scale, massing, design and materials, as well as the appropriateness of the alteration to the amenity enjoyed by neighbouring households. Issues around dominance, privacy and loss of light, as well as the height and position of the extension, in relation to windows and habitable rooms are particularly relevant. Schemes should be appropriately designed and sited to maintain the character of the existing residential properties, whilst the cumulative impact of even small-scale changes with the potential to erode character will be carefully considered.
