District and Local Centres Strategy

Planning authorities should retain and consolidate existing district and local centres for everyday shopping while ensuring they remain complementary to town centres; extensions in these centres are only permitted if they demonstrate no adverse impact on town centres.

Planning authorities should retain and consolidate existing district and local centres as a focus for local everyday shopping, and ensure their role is complementary to the role and function of the town centre. In these centres, extensions should only be permitted where the applicant has demonstrated that no adverse impact will result on town centres in the catchment.
