Airport Public Safety Zones
Development within Airport Public Safety Zones at the ends of runways at the busiest UK airports is restricted to control the number of people at risk in the event of an aircraft accident. A general presumption against development applies in these zones.
Within such zones a general presumption against development will apply. Airport Public Safety Zones are areas of land at the ends of the runways at the busiest airports in the UK, within which development is restricted in order to control the number of people on the ground at risk of death or injury in the event of an aircraft accident on takeoff or landing. The basic objective is to ensure that there is no increase in the number of people living, working or congregating in such areas. Responsibility for air safety issues, including public safety zone policy throughout the UK, is a matter for the secretary of State for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority.
