Anaerobic Digestion Plants
AD plants should be located close to waste sources, designed to integrate with existing farm buildings, and sized appropriately to the location. Transportation network impacts and environmental requirements must be carefully considered.
Well designed and appropriately located anaerobic digestion (AD) plants can make a positive contribution to optimising the potential for renewable and low carbon energy and should be located as close to the waste source as possible, unless it can be demonstrated that the benefits of the scheme outweigh the need for transportation. Farm AD plants should be designed and sited to integrate and cluster with the existing group of farm buildings and be of a size and scale appropriate to the location in which it is proposed. All proposals must be carefully considered to ensure that any potential adverse impacts related to their size and scale are compatible with the location in which it is sited. As well as statutory environmental requirements and the normal planning considerations, impacts on the transportation network will be important.
