Climate Change Act 2022 and Net Zero Emissions Duty

The Climate Change (Northern Ireland) Act 2022 increased the renewable electricity consumption target to 80% by 2030 and places a duty on departments to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The renewable electricity consumption target of 70% by 2030 was increased to 80% by 2030 by the Climate Change (Northern Ireland) Act 2022 (enacted 6 June 2022). The Act also places a duty on departments to ensure that the net emissions account for the year 2050 is at least 100% lower than the baseline and to ensure that the net emissions account for carbon dioxide for the year 2050 is at least 100% lower than the baseline for carbon dioxide.
