Energy Strategy Path to Net Zero and Renewable Targets
The Energy Strategy 'Path to Net Zero Energy' sets a target of at least 70% of electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2030, requiring a doubling of renewable generating capacity. Energy accounts for almost 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in Northern Ireland.
The Energy Strategy 'Path to Net Zero Energy' (published 20 January 2022) recognises that Northern Ireland must take advantage of our natural resources to generate clean energy. It sets out a target to "Meet at least 70% of electricity consumption from a diverse mix of renewable sources by 2030". It recognises that to achieve this objective "A renewable electricity consumption target of at least 70% likely means that we will need to double our renewable generating capacity in order to meet new demands from heating our homes and powering our vehicles". Energy accounts for almost 60% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Northern Ireland. The Energy Strategy sets out a pathway for energy to 2030 that will mobilise the skills, technologies and behaviours needed to take us towards our vision of net zero carbon and affordable energy by 2050.
