Regional Strategic Objectives for Economic Development

The planning system should promote sustainable economic development, tackle disadvantage through job creation and land supply, support rural economies, enable re-use of previously developed sites, and integrate economic development with transport and housing through mixed-use development.

The regional strategic objectives for facilitating economic development through the planning system are to: • promote sustainable economic development in an environmentally sensitive manner; • tackle disadvantage and facilitate job creation by ensuring the provision of a generous supply of land suitable for economic development and a choice and range in terms of quality; • sustain a vibrant rural community by supporting rural economic development of an appropriate nature and scale; • support the re-use of previously developed economic development sites and buildings where they meet the needs of particular economic sectors; • promote mixed-use development and improve integration between transport, economic development and other land uses, including housing.
