Coordination between terrestrial and marine planning in the inter-tidal area

Planning authorities should work closely with the Department, neighbouring councils, and relevant bodies to ensure Local Development Plans and marine plans are complementary, particularly regarding the inter-tidal area and terrestrial development supporting marine area development.

The terrestrial planning system and the marine planning and licensing system are legally and functionally separate but overlap in the inter-tidal area. Planning authorities should work closely with the Department and neighbouring councils/authorities, and other relevant bodies to ensure that LDPs and marine plans are complementary, particularly with regard to the inter-tidal area. This engagement will provide an opportunity to consider any terrestrial area development necessary to support development in the marine area
