Conservation Areas
Local Development Plans should identify existing conservation areas (designated areas of special architectural or historic interest) and may include local policies for their protection and enhancement. New conservation areas or alterations to existing designations may be brought forward by the council or the Department where appropriate.
Existing conservation areas have been designated by the Department under the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 199116. These are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. LDPs should identify existing conservation areas within the plan area and may include local policies or proposals for their protection and/or, enhancement. Proposed new conservation areas or alterations to existing designations may also be brought forward by the council or the Department, where appropriate17.
