Health and well-being considerations in planning

Planning authorities should engage with health bodies and agencies to understand health issues and community needs, and may bring forward local policies to improve health and well-being, social cohesion, and access to infrastructure and facilities.

Planning authorities may engage with relevant bodies and agencies with health remits in order to understand and take account of health issues and the needs of local communities where appropriate. This may include consideration of potential health and health equity impacts, expected future changes, and any information about relevant barriers to improving health and well-being. Where appropriate, councils may bring forward local policies that contribute to improving health and well-being (e.g. policy to manage the proximity of fast food outlets to schools) as well as those which promote social cohesion and the development of social capital, the provision of health, security, community and cultural infrastructure and other local facilities.
