Ecosystem Services and Sustainable Development
Ecosystem services—natural processes providing resources like clean air, water, and food—are essential to health, well-being, and economic prosperity. Careful management and enhancement of these services are integral to sustainable development.
Ecosystem services are the processes by which the environment produces resources used by people that are often taken for granted, such as clean air, water, food and materials. Our health and well-being, and economic prosperity depend upon the services provided by ecosystems and their components which need to be healthy and resilient to change in order to function effectively. The careful management, maintenance and enhancement of ecosystem services are therefore an integral part of sustainable development.
