PPS 7 Addendum Safeguarding the Character of Established Residential Areas·Page 10·2.2

Justification and Amplification Section 2.2: Existing Policy Framework

Policy QD 1 of PPS 7 establishes that housing proposals causing unacceptable damage to local character, environmental quality, or residential amenity will not be permitted, requiring designs sensitive to existing neighbourhoods.

Robust planning polices are already in place. In line with Policy QD 1 in PPS 7 (see Annex B) the Department will not permit proposals for new housing development in established residential areas where these would result in unacceptable damage to the local character, environmental quality or residential amenity of these areas. New residential developments should therefore be sensitive in design terms to people living in the existing neighbourhood and be in harmony with local character.
