Rural design sensitivity

Extensions and alterations to dwellings in the countryside must be sensitive to the rural landscape setting, with particular care for upgrading unimproved dwellings and ancillary buildings. Additional planting should be considered to aid landscape integration and biodiversity.

Care will be needed to ensure that a proposal to extend or alter a dwelling in the countryside is sensitive to its setting within the rural landscape. This is particularly important where it is proposed to upgrade a small un-improved dwelling to modern amenity standards and for proposals involving ancillary buildings. Such cases also provide the opportunity for additional planting which can assist integration into the landscape and help promote biodiversity.
