Grading of Listed Buildings
Listed buildings are divided into three grades (A, B+, and B) to indicate relative importance and guide the administration of grants. Grade A comprises buildings of greatest importance including outstanding architectural examples.
Buildings listed by the Department are divided into three grades; A, B+ and B to give an indication of their relative importance. The gradings are not statutory but they are used by the Department as a management tool to help in administering levels of grant to owners of listed buildings. The categories contained within the list can be briefly defined as follows: Grade A : buildings of greatest importance to Northern Ireland including both outstanding architectural set-pieces and the least altered examples of each representative style, period and grouping. There are 193 buildings in this category (June 1997).
