Conservation Areas - Powers and Current Designations

Article 50 of the Planning (NI) Order 1991 gives the Department power to designate conservation areas of special architectural or historic interest. There are currently 50 conservation areas with potential for further designation and periodic review.

Article 50 of the Planning (NI) Order 1991 provides the Department with the power to designate an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance as a conservation area. There are currently 50 conservation areas in Northern Ireland and further areas may be designated in the future. Existing areas may also be reviewed periodically and adjustments to boundaries made as necessary.
