Policy PED 3: Major Expansion of Existing Industrial Enterprise

Major expansion of industrial enterprises not meeting standard policy provisions is only permitted in exceptional circumstances where relocation is not operationally possible, significant economic contribution is demonstrated, and rural character would not be undermined. Landscape integration measures are required.

A proposal for the major expansion of an existing industrial enterprise that would not meet the above policy provisions will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances where it is demonstrated that: • relocation of the enterprise is not possible for particular operational or employment reasons; • the proposal would make a significant contribution to the local economy; and • the development would not undermine rural character. In all cases, measures to aid integration into the landscape will be required for both the extension and the existing site.
