Sustainable Development Requirements
The Council must exercise its planning functions in a manner that contributes to sustainable development objectives and must take account of the Sustainable Development Strategy and relevant policy guidance.
Section 25 of the Northern Ireland (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006 requires that all Councils, in exercising their functions, act in a manner that will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development. This is reinforced by Section 5 of the Planning Act, which requires that the Council in exercising its functions in relation to a development plan must do so with the objective of furthering sustainable development and take account of relevant policy and guidance, such as the Sustainable Development Strategy.
