Dispersed Rural Communities - Purpose and Designation

Planning authorities identify and designate Dispersed Rural Communities (DRC) to promote rural regeneration and recognise the sense of belonging in certain rural areas, with opportunity for local policies to address specific circumstances.

In the interests of promoting rural regeneration, and in recognition of the strong sense of belonging and sense of place in certain rural areas the planning authority, through the development plan process, will identify and designate Dispersed Rural Communities (DRC) after consultation with District Councils, local communities and the public. The development plan may also bring forward local policies, to amplify and complement regional policy, on matters specific to the local circumstances which exist within particular DRCs.
