Natura 2000 Wildlife Sites and Protected Areas
The Habitats Directive establishes a European network of protected wildlife sites (Natura 2000) comprising Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) to maintain rare habitat types and ensure species survival.
One of the main initiatives of the Habitats Directive is the creation of a European network of "Natura 2000" wildlife sites made up of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) under the Habitats Directive and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) under the related EC Birds Directive.
