Water Framework Directive Objectives

The Water Framework Directive establishes a framework for protection of surface waters and groundwater, aiming to reach good ecological and chemical status in all waters by 2015, while balancing water and nature protection with sustainable use of natural resources.

The aim of the Water Framework Directive is to establish a framework for the protection of all surface waters and groundwater with the aim to reach good ecological and chemical status in all waters as a rule by 2015. Both the Habitats and Birds Directives and the Water Framework Directive aim at ensuring healthy aquatic ecosystems while at the same time ensuring a balance between water/nature protection and the sustainable use of nature's natural resources.
