Special Protection Areas
The Birds Directive requires the selection and protection of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) important for breeding, over-wintering and migrating birds, and requires Member States to avoid deterioration of wild bird habitats outside designated sites.
The Birds Directive provides for the selection of sites for their importance as areas for breeding, over wintering and migrating birds known as Special Protection Areas (SPAs). The Directive also requires Member States to strive to avoid the deterioration of habitats for wild birds outside designated sites.
