PPS 17 Control of Outdoor Advertisements·Page 12·4.1

Justification and Amplification for Policy AD 1

Advertisement display is common in commercial areas but must be controlled to prevent visual clutter, manage illumination, and protect heritage assets including listed buildings and conservation areas from adverse advertising effects.

The display of advertisements is an ever-increasing feature of our main streets and commercial centres, often adding colour and interest. Care, however, must be taken to ensure that an advertisement will not detract from the place where it is to be displayed or its surroundings and that it will not prejudice public safety. In particular it is important to prevent clutter, adequately control signs involving illumination and to protect features such as listed buildings and conservation areas from the potential adverse effects of advertising.
