Sustainable Design and Environmental Considerations for Tourism
Tourism developments should promote sustainability through reuse of redundant buildings, energy conservation, renewable technologies, and sustainable drainage systems to manage surface water runoff and reduce flooding risk.
Sustainable development can be delivered through good design, for example the reuse of redundant buildings for tourism purposes rather than new build on greenfield sites. Sustainable development can also be promoted through design which secures good energy conservation and the use of renewable technologies such as wind power and solar gain to reduce future energy needs. The use of sustainable drainage systems for tourism development will ensure that surface water runoff is managed in a sustainable way, thereby reducing the potential for localised flooding and pollution of watercourses.
