Local Determination of Tourism Development Strategy Engagement

The extent to which development plans prepare tourism strategies depends on local determination based on existing or anticipated tourism activity levels and locally important tourism issues, with particular recognition for government-backed Tourism Signature Projects.

The extent to which a development plan engages in the preparation of a tourism development strategy and the associated tourism policies that flow from it is largely a matter for local determination and may depend upon existing or anticipated levels of tourism activity in the plan area or the identification of locally important tourism issues. The promotion of tourism through the Tourism Signature Projects and the Tourism 'Priorities for Action' Plan, should be recognised by development plans, where relevant, as government has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the tourism product in such areas backed by significant levels of investment.
