Planning Permission Requirements for Culverting and Canalisation

Culverting and canalisation of watercourses, whether as standalone operations or associated with land development, generally requires planning permission, though some operations may be permitted development under the Planning (General Development) Order.

Culverting and / or canalisation of watercourses, whether undertaken as an operation in its own right, or as works associated with the development of land usually requires planning permission. Some culverting operations may constitute permitted development as set out under the provisions of the Planning (General Development) Order (Northern Ireland) 1993 and subsequent amendments. In some cases it may be necessary to remove permitted development rights where culverting is likely to increase flood risk elsewhere.
