Sustainable drainage systems in drainage assessments

Developers should consider sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) as the preferred solution in drainage assessments, using techniques such as water storage, swales, wetlands and groundwater infiltration in combination for maximum benefit.

In carrying out the drainage assessment, the developer should give consideration to the use of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) as the preferred drainage solution. These systems manage surface water at or close to source. Sustainable drainage techniques will include water storage (eg ponds), swales, wetlands and groundwater infiltration. It is recommended that these techniques are used in combination to secure maximum benefit. More detailed information on the general application of SuDS is contained in Annex C.
