Climate Change and Flood Risk

Climate change is predicted to increase sea levels, winter precipitation, and extreme rainfall events. Combined with urban development and loss of open space, this will significantly increase surface water flooding incidence.

Climate change predictions of rising global temperatures will be accompanied by sea level rise, an increase in overall winter precipitation and an increase in intensity and duration of extreme rainfall events. This, along with other factors such as the ongoing development of impermeable surfaces in urban areas, removal of vegetation and loss of open space, will, if continued, greatly increase the incidence of surface water flooding.
