Flood Risk Extent in Northern Ireland

Approximately 5% of properties in Northern Ireland (46,000 properties) are located within fluvial and coastal floodplains, with about 15,500 of these properties protected by existing flood defences or culvert systems.

There is widespread potential in Northern Ireland for localised flooding. Significant flood events have occurred in the recent past. A description of these and some major historical flood events is contained in the Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PFRA) published by Rivers Agency (DARD) in December 2011. The PFRA estimates that 46000 or 5% of properties in Northern Ireland are located within fluvial and coastal floodplains. Approximately 15500 of these properties are estimated to be protected by flood defences or culvert systems.
