Public Car Parking Provision in Town and City Centres

Public car parking is essential for the vitality and viability of town and city centres, but a balance must be struck to avoid constraining economic investment while considering releasing parking land for alternative development.

Public car parking provision is essential to the vitality and viability of town and city centres. There may, however, be significant economic benefits in releasing certain parking land for other forms of development in the heart of towns and cities. Clearly a delicate balance needs to be struck to ensure that the parking strategy does not constrain economic investment or act as a disincentive to the vitality of the town centre.
