Integration of Transportation and Land Use in Development Planning

Development location and design fundamentally influence travel patterns. Planning decisions should integrate transportation and land use to reduce the physical separation between housing and services like shopping, jobs, health and education facilities.

The location and design of development has a fundamental influence on travel patterns. In the allocation of land in a development plan and making decisions on development proposals, a key aim will be to integrate transportation and land use in ways which enable people to carry out their everyday activities with less need to travel and with the maximum modal choice. This will require the consideration of ways to reduce the physical separation between housing and services such as shopping, jobs, health and education facilities.
