Achieving Balanced Communities Through Diversity

Balanced communities require diversity and social inclusion with a mix of social groups and housing types, supported by local employment, open space, community facilities, shopping and services to accommodate people of different backgrounds.

Achieving balanced communities is one of the major themes for housing in the RDS. Diversity and social inclusion are distinguishing marks of well-balanced communities which embrace a mix of social groups and are able to accommodate people of different backgrounds who wish to live together. In terms of landuse, a variety of housing types and tenures offering choice to meet different needs, supported by the opportunity to share in local employment, open space, community meeting places, local shopping and service facilities are required for the building of more balanced communities.
