Specialist Facilities and Assessment for Hazardous Waste Treatment
Specialist treatment facilities may be needed for Northern Ireland's hazardous waste. Applications must demonstrate that built development is appropriate to the waste's nature and hazards, with consideration given to compatibility with nearby land uses and local impacts assessed through Environmental Impact Assessment where specific sites are sought.
A range of specialist treatment facilities may be needed to handle Northern Ireland's hazardous waste, as described in the Waste Management Plans. In determining applications for managing hazardous waste consideration will be given to the compatibility of the operation with other nearby land uses. It must be demonstrated that the built development associated with proposed methods of handling, storage, treatment and processing of waste is appropriate to the nature and hazards of the waste(s) concerned. Local impacts, including the comparison of alternative sites, should be addressed through Environmental Impact Assessment when specific sites are being sought.
