Precautionary Principle in Waste Management Assessment
The Department applies the precautionary principle when assessing waste management facility proposals, recognizing that such facilities can cause significant environmental damage through visual intrusion, habitat destruction, heritage impacts, or pollution.
Many waste management facilities by reason of their size, nature or location have the potential to cause significant damage to the environment in terms of visual intrusion, habitat or heritage destruction and pollution. In assessing all proposals for waste management facilities the Department will be guided by the precautionary principle outlined in paragraph 13 of Planning Policy Statement 1 "General Principles".
