Sustainable Development

References the UK Sustainable Development Strategy which establishes four parallel objectives: social progress, environmental protection, prudent resource use, and economic growth. Northern Ireland has endorsed these principles as the basis for its approach.

A UK Sustainable Development Strategy - A Better Quality of Life was published in May 1999. At the heart of the Strategy is the principle of ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now, and for generations to come by seeking to meet four parallel objectives of sustainable development: • Social progress which recognises the needs of everyone; • Effective protection of the environment; • Prudent use of natural resources; and • Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment.
