Evidence of Alternative Options for New Masts

All new mast applications must demonstrate that alternatives including existing buildings and structures have been explored, with clear reasons explaining why these options are not feasible; permission may be refused if evidence is unsatisfactory.

All applications for new masts will need to be accompanied by evidence that the possibility of erecting antennas on an existing building, mast or other structure has been explored and should outline the specific reasons why this course of action is not possible. Where the evidence regarding the consideration of alternative options is not considered satisfactory, planning permission may be refused. In such circumstances the Department will give clear reasons why it considers the evidence to be unsatisfactory. In reaching its decisions, the Department will of course be mindful of the technical constraints on network development.
