Environmental Benefits of Telecommunications

While telecommunications equipment can negatively impact the environment if poorly sited, modern telecommunications can provide environmental benefits by reducing travel needs, vehicle emissions, congestion, and enabling home working and improved traffic management systems.

While it is acknowledged that badly sited or poorly designed telecommunications equipment can have a negative impact on the environment, it should also be noted that modern telecommunications can bring environmental benefits. They can help reduce the need to travel and hence reduce vehicle emissions and congestion, for example by enabling 'home working'. They have also enabled the development of 'real time' driver information systems which can lead to better use of roads and reduced congestion.
