Section 5 Overview - External Fire Spread

This section contains provisions for designing and constructing external walls and roofs to restrict ignition risk, flame spread, and fire spread between buildings.

This Section contains provisions relating to the design and construction of – (a) external walls in order that – (i) the risk of ignition from an external source to the outside surface of a building and the spread of flame over the external surface is restricted; and (ii) the materials used to construct external walls and attachments to them and how they are assembled do not contribute to the rate of fire spread up the outside of a building; and (iii) the spread of fire from one building to another is restricted; and (b) roofs – in order that the risk of spread of flame and of fire penetration from an external source are restricted.
