Impact of Restaurants and Cafés on Town Centres

Restaurants and cafés can reduce the vitality and viability of shopping centres and cause amenity issues including litter, noise, and odours. Planning conditions can restrict certain food types, but control over food quality and type is limited.

Where restaurants and cafés occupy a disproportionately high percentage of shopping frontages, they can reduce the vitality and viability of centres, increase litter and cause other amenity issues such as noise and odours. In certain cases, a condition can be placed on a planning permission for a restaurant or café restricting the provision/cooking/serving of fried foods on the premises; however for the most part, planning cannot control the quality and type of food served within restaurants and cafés.
